Introduction to ‘Deep Web’

What is a Deep Web?

I’m regularly asked this question and thought it might be worth putting a post to define Deep Web and hopefully shed some light on the topic.

Before I got to know everything about deep web.I use to think that it must be something cool or very different from this surface web
Believe me it’s not.

The surface Web also known as the Clearnet, the visible Web or indexable Web is that portion of the World Wide Web that is indexable by conventional search engines. The part of the Web that is not reachable this way is called the Deep Web.

Search engines construct a database of the Web by using programs called spiders or Web Crawlers that begin with a list of known Web pages. The spider gets a copy of each page and indexes it, storing useful information that will let the page be quickly retrieved again later. Any hyperlinks to new pages are added to the list of pages to be crawled. Eventually all reachable pages are indexed, unless the spider runs out of time or disk space. The collection of reachable pages defines the Surface Web.

For various reasons (e.g., the Robots Exclusion Standards, links generated by JavaScript and Flash, password-protection) some pages can not be reached by the spider or the spiders are blocked.
These ‘invisible’ pages are referred to as the Deep Web. We cannot locates such website or pages with Google,Bing or any other search engine.

This data isn’t necessarily hidden on purpose. It’s just hard for current search engine technology to find and make sense of it.
Facebook itself can be considered as a deep web website. As there are millions of pages and this search engines cannot index each and every page.

Some Facts:

No one really knows how big the deep Web really is, but it’s hundreds (or perhaps even thousands) of times bigger that the surface Web.

  • Public information on the deep Web is currently 500 to 650 times larger than the commonly defined World Wide Web.
  • Estimates based on extrapolations speculate that the deep Web consists of about 7.9 petabytes of data.
  • More accurate estimates are available for the number of resources in the deep Web:300,000 deep web sites in the entire Web in 2004,
  • 14,000 deep web sites existed in the Russian part of the Web in 2006.
  • Sixty of the largest deep-Web sites collectively contain about 750 terabytes of information — sufficient by themselves to exceed the size of the surface Web forty times.
  • The deep Web contains nearly 550 billion individual documents compared to the 1 billion of the surface Web.
  • Total quality content of the deep Web is 1,000 to 2,000 times greater than that of the surface Web.

What lies beneath the surface is a who’s who of hackers, scientists, drug dealers, astronomers, assassins, physicists, revolutionaries, Government officials, Police, Feds, terrorists, perverts, data miners, kidnappers, sociologists, etc. As you can tell, the party goes across the entire moral spectrum.

I find this subject to be utterly fascinating which needs to be studied further. Whilst there are tons of bad seeds who inhabit this deep web, there’s also good seeds who wish to spread their information quickly and most often anonymously, to avoid legal or ethical ramifications.

In order to access the deep web you use the Tor browser in addition to the Tor extension for Firefox. This is a good starting point.

You can download TOR from here: TOR Download

And then access the Hidden Wiki which is a small but useful reference point to start on your journey of the deep web. kpvz7ki2v5agwt35.onion

Don’t be an idiot and start clicking on links you see on the hiddenwiki, but poke your head in the door you’ll see its not modern anarchy in there.

Why is DEEP WEB dangerous?

The reason the “Deep Web” is the way it is is because only about 10 percent of what’s on the internet is generally/commercially interesting. Sure you could dig deep into the annals of the information superhighway but most if it is raw information.  They are websites that purposely don’t get pinged to search engines so they are harder to find.

To sum it up, it’s basically a private section of server space to share data off record. All that wiki leaks stuffed that leaked a 3-4 years back? That’s been on deep web for years. Ever seen a movie and see the bad guy or hacker loggin’ into some weird looking private server? that’s all real. Generally, terrorist networks, spy agencies, drug dealers, assassins-for-hire, and those looking for child porn lurk around those parts.

There’s a Hidden Wiki, there(as i specified above), and on the wiki they’re categories of links. There are things like blogs, forums (from normal to revolutionary to blatantly illegal), Tor-enabled instant messaging and chat, anonymous file hosting, anonymous financing, anonymous tipping and information exchanges, information on computer security/anonymity, info on warez/cracks/hacking, all the books, music, movies you can possibly imagine, even links to sports betting and trade information, links to international drug markets, prostitution rings, assassin markets, black market products, child pornography, Some of societies most deviant people use this network.
Not just those that browse the sites on there but also those who create it and manage them..and it’s almost impossible to find either of the offenders.

Child Pornography is the most disturbing of this all.(I suggest please do not enter this section of websites).
Even daily viewers cannot stand those videos.

Silkroad was the biggest online black market present before it got shut down in October 2013.It had a trade value of 1.2 million US Dollars per month.

Even underground fighting tournaments to the death (I’m not joking very real very organized). Very Real trained professional fighters. It may seem surreal but they are guys that train with the best and want no part of UFC or any fight league. Dudes who really enjoy fighting to the death. It’s just crazy explaining it it’s not some barroom brawl. These things happen and alot of millionaires pay big money to see them. Modern Gladiator battles. I heard there are some with humans vs animals.

However, 0.00000001% of all data on the dark web is stuff normal people will be able to access, understand and use. And even a small fraction of that is illegal stuff.. its not like some hardcore underground network of spies, killers, pedos and criminals. The rest % is used by their respected authorities.

While the information on the deep web is vastly overwhelming, it should not be feared. In most aspects, the information is just there, it’s what you choose to do with the information that can lead you to trouble and imprisonment. Producing, storing, exchanging, transferring information.

Before you begin I suggest learning how the deep web works and what you can do to better protect yourself against intruders and anything that can compromise your true anonymity.

Keep in mind that Tor is not 100% anonymous…multiple proxies are needed in addition to tor, of course a firewall and Antivirus as well. I’d disconnect or put tape over my webcam , disable javascript cookies, temp data, use ccleaner.

Hope this helped.

Sorry I will not provide any other links of deep web other than HiddenWiki.
Fearing that WordPress may take my blog/post down.

How to install ‘Guest Additions’ on Kali linux

I had explained this in my previous post Learn to install Kali Linux on windows 7/8/8.1 too.

Many of us got stuck while we were installing guest additions in Kali Linux.
So  I will  explain it again in this post.

 GUEST ADDITIONS ??

We need to install Guest Addition because the problem with Kali, which it doesn’t support yet,is the ability to resize the screen. The Resolution of the virtual machine stays the same.
You may have noticed the mouse pointer too.
So to remove these flaws,we will install Guest Additions.

50

1.But before installing reboot your Kali Linux. By clicking root icon on the top right corner and selecting Shut-down.

51

52

2.Create a snapshot once you are out of Kali.
With snapshots, you can save a particular state of a virtual machine for later use. At any later time, you can revert to that state, even though you may have changed the VM considerably since then.
Click on Snapshot>>Take Snapshot>Add Name(Anything you like)>>Add Description>>Ok

56

Installing Guest Additions

3.Reboot Kali Linux Before we install Guest Additions we need to install Linux Headers.Open the terminal window first.

64

4.We are going to go ahead and update the packages and headers.

root@kali:~# apt-get update && apt-get install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r)

65

5.All the packages and Headers will be installed.

55

6.Once we go through that install process,Now we going to actually insert our Guest Additions.
Go to Devices>>Insert Guest Additions CD Image.

57

7.A dialog box will appear just click cancel. You can see that the file/disk is successfully mounted.

58

8.Now we have to copy this disk from the CDrom. So just type this command in terminal window . Press Enter

root@kali:~#cp media/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run /tmp/

Press Enter

root@kali:~# cd /tmp/

Press Enter

root@kali:/tmp# chmod 755 VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

Press Enter

root@kali:~# ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

Press Enter

It goes ahead Builds the modules and it will install it.

59

Now once our guest additions are install we will have to restart our virtual Machine.

9.Type ‘reboot‘ in command and hit enter or do the manual way by clicking in root icon.
The VM will restart itself.

Once you reboot it,The window will fit with the screen or it will change to the size you desire.
All the previous flaw are now disposed.

60

Compare the picture above step 1,with this picture below.See the Difference.
isn’t the screen fitting with window.

61

Great We are done!!

Now just one last thing we have to do.Create a Snapshot

10.Shut Down your virtual Machine as shown in step 1.
And Create a Snapshot as explained in step 2.

62

63

DONE!!

Your Guest Additions are installed.
Use this Linux distro for learning only.If you are a beginner do not try those application if you don’t know anything about them.

Message me if you want a tutorial on any other software.I will drop a post for you 😉 🙂

Comments will be appreciated 🙂
